Apache Server
The Apache server developed as a side project when the
National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) web server program
dissolved in 1998. It was led by Robert McCool who continued to develop
the server after leaving the NCSA. It is a UNIX based server with open
source coding which has allowed it to rapidly increase in popularity.
The Apache server got it name, not from Geronimo’s tribe, but
from the way the NCSA left all the work that had been done on it. There
were many little programs (patches) that helped the server function
better but they were located on different computers in different locations,
a patchy server. It still worked incredibly well.
Over half of internet activity is conducted on the Apache server. It
was originally very UNIX based, but with the development of Apache 2
which offered more cross platform functionality. It mainly offered increased
usability for Windows based programs as well as faster speeds. It is
mostly used to serve dynamic, as well as static websites.
