Host Server

A host server can be any computer with a server program that is connected to a network. The computer is usually designed exclusively for serving other computers. It often lacks a screen, keyboard and graphics processor. They also have much more memory, RAM and hard drive, than a regular desktop. Often the processor is designed to handle multiple users at the same time.

A host server is where a client puts their information, either a database or a website, for access at any time. These servers are constantly running and have multiple fail safes to prevent power outages and data loss. They are able to update programs and other data without having to reboot.

For small businesses using a host server has a number of advantages over having a dedicated server. It is much cheaper than owning one, and all the maintenance is done by a system administrator, so no new information has to be learned. One disadvantage is the lack of control. It can be difficult to add more information, and when the server goes down the host company has to be contacted to fix the matter, although they are usually very aware of the state of their servers.
