Server FAQs

What is the best server system to use?

That really depends on the type of computing that needs to be accomplished. For viewing websites and sending email almost any type of server can be used. They are all useful in using websites and accessing databases. If you are running off a certain computer system they usually have a compatible server that is optimized for that specific computer or operating system. Windows and Apple both make powerful servers that are optimized for their software and hardware, but are also multi-platform so they can be viewed by most operating systems. Apache is a popular UNIX based server that helped to jump start the internet revolution.

How can I get my website online?

The best way to get your website live is through an online hosting company. Once you have the website built, and the domain name purchased, you can contact a hosting company that will upload your website onto their servers and allows access by anyone at anytime. This is easier than owning and maintaining your own server because a system administrator is responsible for regular maintenance, back-ups and updates. They are generally very inexpensive depending on how big the site is, and if the website gets a lot of traffic you can sell ads which can pay for the hosting fees, which are usually not more than $10 a month. The other option is to purchase a server computer and software and run your website from your home. It needs full time power, even during outages, to work best.

How do servers differ from desktop computers?

A server’s task is to store and recall information as fast as possible and send it to other computers. There are few hardware differences between a desktop computer and a server. A server does not need a screen because it is very rarely accessed directly. There is also no keyboard, servers are controlled by a master computer that has a user interface. Because there is no screen, a graphics processor is not necessary in a server. They do have much larger hard drives, usually multiple ones that are very fast. There is also an abundance of random access memory, or RAM, which allows for multiple users to access the same information simultaneously. They also have very fast, and multiple connections to a network and other banks of servers.
