With server hosting, each site sits in its own separate section of the server. This allows multiple people to keep their data on a server while the maintenance is done by a system administrator. That makes it more economical as many people are sharing the entire cost of the server. It is the most popular way of hosting a website.

Server hosting can be difficult for sites that have complex programming, and they can be costly when used for large amounts of information. Each user does not have control of the server, and speed may be limited because other users are accessing the server at the same time.

There are thousands of server hosting providers in the United States alone. Some are large companies with huge server banks that serve hundreds of thousands of people a day and some are single units contained in individual homes. A lot of revenue for these servers is generated through advertisements and pay per click sites.
